How to use it
- Find the letter you need in the contents table at the start.
- Fill in every yellow [bracket], especially account, cheque, consumer or flat numbers, which the office needs to find your record.
- Attach self-attested copies of the documents mentioned in the letter and list them under Enclosures.
- Print, sign, and ask the office to stamp your copy as received.
Tips
- For a failed ATM or UPI transaction, complain to your bank first; if it is not resolved within 30 days you can complain to the RBI Ombudsman online.
- The RTI fee of ₹10 applies to central government offices and most states; a few states charge differently, and people below the poverty line pay no fee.
- Many police departments let you report lost documents online and download the report at once; use the letter when you have to go to the police station.
- Rent letters should follow your rent agreement: notice periods, increases and deposit refunds are whatever the agreement says.
Questions and answers
Do banks accept handwritten or printed letters?
Yes. Most branches accept a signed letter for requests like address change, cheque book, stop payment or account closure, although some ask you to fill their own form as well. Carry your ID proof.
Who do I address an RTI application to?
To the Public Information Officer (PIO) of the office that holds the information. If you do not know the name, "The Public Information Officer" and the office address is enough.
Is the police complaint the same as an FIR?
The letter is your written complaint asking the police to register an FIR. The FIR itself is written by the police, who must give you a free copy.
